Hunts U18 Cup Semi-Final

GODMANCHESTER U18      1       ST NEOTS TOWN U18       3

(played at St Neots)

St Neots U18’s won their way through to their third County Cup Final in the last seven years with a comfortable victory over visiting Godmanchester.   The match was switched to St Neots at the request of the opposition who struggled to impose themselves on the match.   The home side were below their best but never looked likely to lose and they now move on to face St Ives U18’s in the Cup Final at Eynesbury on 7th April.

St Neots began well dominating much of the first half.   Ben Southwood brought a good save from visiting keeper Tom Brooks after six minutes and three minutes later Andre Williams saw his free kick rebound from a post with the keeper beaten.   However, within a minute St Neots were ahead as Sam Donkin threaded a cross ball past defenders to find Jack Eldridge and he outpaced his marker to open the scoring.   After 18 minutes, it was 2-0 as Ben Southwood netted from close range after a neat build up by Kieran Waites and Eldridge.   Little was seen of the visiting attack although Shae Humphrey headed off the line after a mistake by his goalkeeper.   Godmanchester’s best first half effort came four minutes before the break when the hardworking Michael Speed brought a good save from Evan Jeckells.

After half time, St Neots became less positive seemingly happy to rest on their two goals advantage.   The match went through a scrappy period – the feature being the solidity of the St Neots defence marshalled by skipper Isaac Clarke.   Then after 65 minutes they received a wake-up call as Rowan Chapman was perfectly placed at the far post to convert Speed’s cross and give the visitors some hope.   However, St Neots responded swiftly with Sam Piesse testing Brooks with a well struck free kick and Williams shooting narrowly wide.   The clinching goal arrived ten minutes from time when man of the match Erhan Nurettin deservedly marked his performance with a sweetly struck shot from 25 yards that left Brooks anchored to the spot.   Godmanchester refused to give up and Speed had an effort cleared off the line late in the game.
