FA Trophy and FA Youth Cup opponents announced

Friday, 07 July 2017 20:21

The draws for the early rounds of the FA Cup, FA Youth Cup, FA Trophy and FA Vase were made at lunchtime today, Friday 7th July.

We can announce that in the FA Trophy, we have been given a home draw in the FIRST ROUND QUALIFYING to be played SATURDAY 28 OCTOBER 2017. kick off 3:00pm, when we will face the winners of Romulus FC and Corby Town FC.

ROMULUS are based in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham where they ground share with neighbours Sutton Coldfield Town.   They play at Step Four in the Northern Premier League South and last season finished 13th - three places above Stamford.   St Neots have never played Romulus.

CORBY TOWN are much better known to our Club.   They will play this season at Step Four in the Northern Premier League South following their relegation from the Premier Division at the end of last season.   We played Corby in the Southern League Premier Division four times in both 2012/13 and the following season winning once and losing the other three including both matches at home.   Last season Corby entered the competition at the First Qualifying Round stage losing at home 2-0 to Stafford Rangers.    We have twice played Corby in National Competition winning once and losing the other.   In 1970/71 Corby beat us 4-1 at Shortsands in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup but six seasons later we gained our revenge also at Shortsands beating them 3-0 in the Second Qualifying Round when they were a Southern League club.   Our scorers in that famous victory were Tony Hall (2) and Steve Young.

Our Trophy record could do with a boost because in five seasons since re-joining the competition we have only once made it as far as the Third Qualifying Round.   On the other hand, we have only suffered defeat in the First Qualifying Round on one occasion.   Last year we lost to Hungerford at home on the Second Qualifying Round.

(Thank you to John Walker for the preview)

Our Under 18s also know their opponents in the FA Youth Cup. We have been drawn away from home at Peterborough Northern Star in the PRELIMINARY ROUND to be played in WEEK COMMENCING MONDAY 4 SEPTEMBER 2017 and should be progress, we will be away from home again, this time at Godmanchester Rovers in the FIRST ROUND QUALIFYING to be played WEEK COMMENCING MONDAY 18 SEPTEMBER 2017
