Young Saints extend lead at the top of the table with comprehensive win over Histon

THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE CAMBRIDGE DIVISION

ST NEOTS TOWN U18       5         HISTON U18       0

With another hat trick taking his goals tally to 17 in seven matches – 15 of those in the last four – Joe Rider led his side to a five points lead in the league table with a convincing victory over visiting Histon.    It completed a league double over the visitors this month but to their credit they never gave up trying despite the goals tally against them building up.

St Neots got off to a sensational start with their opening goal after just 19 seconds as David Muse harried defender and goalkeeper into a stupid error which left the home player to walk the ball into an empty net.   To their credit this did not seem to faze the visitors who forgot their indiscretion and competed well in the next half hour.   St Neots enjoyed a much great share of possession, but the final ball was never quite right, and the visitors defended comfortably against the league’s leading scorers.   Chances came and went with Tom Leagas and Adrian O’Hara both shooting wide before Jeffrey Alihonou created Histon’s first opening but he could not finish.   From a Bradley Brown cross Joe Rider stretched to head the ball onto the roof of the net and the same player saw another effort deflected for a corner by Joshua Byrne.  Louis Hobbs looked the most dangerous attacking player for the visitors and he too lifted a shot over the keeper and onto the roof of the net.   Then in the final minute of the first half from a sublime cross by Oliver Rowland, Joe Rider opened his account for the evening with a well-placer header to give St Neots a 2-0 half time advantage.

With Brown and Sam Routs orchestrating the St Neots midfield, the home side continued to dominate after the interval.   Routs fired wide and Leon Fulianty up for a free kick flicked the ball against the near post.  Leagas had a shot deflected and the pressure eventually paid off after 63 minutes when brilliant individual skill by Joe Rider saw him take two defenders out of the game before turning and shooting past Harvey Daniels.     Three minutes later a Leagas corner was punched clear by Daniels but only as far as Adrian O’Hara who sent a low shot into the corner of the net for 4-0.   With seven minutes left Histon substitute Joe Cesare had Histon’s best chance for a consolation goal when he went clear of the St Neots’ defence but lost control and almost inevitably Joe Rider was to have the final word as he collected a Kyle Rudland cross and his hat trick at the far post to net from a narrow angle to complete the 5-0 victory, a minute from time.

St Neots:  Brewer, Leagas, Goodridge, O’Hara, Rowland, Fulianty, Muse, Brown (B), Routs, Rider, Wood

Subs used:   Coppolaro, Rudland, Lennon and Frezza.
