Looking Ahead To A Busy Week

Sunday, 13 January 2019 12:48

St Neots now face a critical week with two matches that could well shape the rest of the season.   On Tuesday it is the semi-final of the Huntingdonshire Senior Cup – a trophy that the club lifted last season with a thumping 6-1 victory over town rivals Eynesbury Rovers who had been the holders the previous season.   Their opponents who have home advantage will be Yaxley – this season celebrating their first ever season at Step Four of the pyramid in the Southern League Division One Central.   They have made a good start presently sitting half way up the table with much the same squad as won their promotion from the UCL.   The last time our two clubs met was in the Senior Cup three seasons ago – a quarter final tie won by our lads 6-1 with Tom Meechan, Adam Tann, Luis Vieira, Claudio Ofosu, Tom Ward and Isaac Galliford our goal scorers.   Unsurprisingly we have no survivors from that team in our squad today.   Yaxley last lifted the Senior Cup in 2007/08 beating St Ives in a penalty shoot out but have been beaten finalist twice since then.

On Saturday Alvechurch visit the Premier Plus Stadium for a return league fixture – the two sides having played in Worcestershire in November when the home side won by the odd goal in five.   That was an entertaining match with St Neots coming from behind to 1-1 thanks to a rare Tom Wood goal, before Gary Wharton scored just before the break to make it 2-1.   However, Alvechurch levelled in the second minute after the break and went on to score a winning goal.   The Worcestershire club are having an outstanding first season at Step three currently one of five clubs on 39 points vying for the fifth play off position in the table and last week they recoded their fifth home league victory of the season with a 1-0 win over struggling Halesowen Town.
