Looking ahead to our next outing....

St Neots now face another critical weekend as they travel to Needham Market for their next Southern League engagement and the host side will be eagerly looking to complete a convincing league double.   Back in November the Suffolk side visited St Neots and returned back down the A14 with a 4-0 victory to their credit – their best away win of the season.   Last Saturday Needham began their away match at Stratford in a play off position but with places in that top half of the table changing with each sequence of fixtures they now find themselves after a 3-1 reversal in a cluster of sides just outside the play off zone.   This is to be St Neots third trip to Needham –the previous ones being in the FA Vase competition in 2003 and 2008.   The 2003 visit was a First Round match in the competition in a season that saw one of the best runs in that competition for St Neots.  Needham were our second of our victims of that campaign having defeated local rivals Somersham Town in a Preliminary Round.   From the Needham victory (our goal scorers Steve Kuhne (2) and Ronnie Fortune) we went on to defeat Beaconsfield SYCOB on penalty kicks in a replay, and Thamesmead Town at home before losing in the fourth round to Keynsham at Bristol.   However four years later Needham went two rounds further than us before losing in the semi-final of the FA Vase to their fellow Eastern Counties League colleagues Kirkham and Wesham.   We met again in the FA Vase in 2008 at Needham Market where we were beaten 4-3.   Since then Needham lifted the ECL championship in 2009/10 to earn promotion to Step Four where they contested the play-offs in three successive seasons before winning their place at Step Three.   That was in the Isthmian pyramid, but the latest reorganisation has placed then in the Southern League Central.
