Looking Ahead To The Visit Of Barwell

Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:15

UPCOMING MATCH PREVIEW

On Saturday Barwell make only their third visit to the Town – the first one being six years ago this month and the second in a FA Trophy Second Round Qualifying Round engagement last November.   That resulted in a victory for the visitors by a goal to nil scored in the second half after being reduced to ten men after only 28 minutes.   We then visited Barwell for a rearranged midweek league match just before Christmas leading to another victory for our visitors by six goals to one – Gary Wharton getting our consolation goal.   It was a match played in atrocious conditions on a near waterlogged pitch and after an even first half Barwell ran riot with five second half goals.     When we were promoted to the Premier Division of the Southern League in 2012, we joined Barwell in that Division.   They had finished ninth the previous season – their first season in that Division and when they visited St Neots, they were fifth with matches in hand of all the clubs ahead of them.  The result was a 2-2 draw with our lads taking a first half lead before conceding two goals and having to come back from behind to grab a point.   The return match that season was memorable – a 3-2 victory for us after leading 3-0 at one stage – with the result confirming our survival at Step Three and robbing Barwell of the chance of a play-off place.   Barwell were then transferred across the pyramid to the Northern Premier League.    Both of our teams were defeated in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy last season – our lads at home to Stourbridge and Barwell at home by lower graded Mildenhall Town.   Last week Barwell were beaten at home 1-0 by a Hitchin side now beginning to climb away from the relegation zone.   That left the Canaries in sixteenth place – eight points ahead of our lads.   If effort and commitment are to be key factors in this match then Marc Abbott’s youngsters must be in with a real chance.
