Looking ahead to the visit of Lowestoft Town

UPCOMING MATCH PREVIEW

The visitors to the Premier Plus Stadium on Saturday are Lowestoft Town.

The Trawlerboys have been playing at Step Three for three seasons now since their relegation from the Football Conference. After two seasons in the Ryman area of the pyramid they transferred to the Southern League Central this season and like us have struggled for consistency. This is to be the third meeting of our two sides this season – both of the others after long midweek treks into East Anglia for us staged at the Amber Dew Events Stadium at Lowestoft. On 2nd October last year both teams chose to field understrength teams for our Southern League Cup tie which resulted in a 3-1 victory for our hosts – Luke Knight our scorer (his final goal in a St Neots shirt), and then three weeks later a rearranged league fixture finished 2-1 to us with Nabil Shariff scoring both goals. Our last league meeting at St Neots was 46 years ago in the Eastern Counties League when we fought out a 0-0 draw, but our Norfolk visitors have been in town once since then for an FA Vase tie on 21st November 2006 when they returned home with a handsome 6-1 victory with Craig Reynolds claiming our consolation goal. This match is vital for both sides for a glance at the league table before last weekend showed that our point on Saturday lifted us above our weekend visitors who were beaten at Alvechurch. Lowestoft may have some reservations about their trip here today because on 8th January 1972 they were scheduled to visit us here at our former home at Shortsands for an ECL fixture, but they never arrived because their team coach was involved in a fatal road accident on the A11 in which the driver of the car was killed and the coach driver and eight of the team and officials required hospital treatment.
