John Walker looks ahead to another busy week

There is no rest for St Neots as the season rolls on.   Following their FA Trophy defeat at Carlton last Saturday they travel to Yaxley on Tuesday for their first-round engagement in the Southern League Challenge Cup.   St Neots reached this stage of the competition with an away victory in their delayed Preliminary Round tie at Kempston Rovers, whilst Yaxley enjoyed the luxury of a bye to enter the competition at this stage.   This will be St Neots’ second trip to Yaxley this season because they were there almost two months ago in their pre-season Huntingdonshire Premier Cup group match which finished in a 2-2 draw.   The resultant penalty shoot-out saw victory for the home side with both teams fielding largely experimental sides.   In fact, seven of the St Neots starting line-up in that match have not yet featured in a Southern League match.   Last season St Neots won their Preliminary Round tie beating Bedford Town in a home penalty shot out before going to Lowestoft Town in the First Round and losing 3-1 and it is now three seasons since they featured in Round Two of the competition when they were beaten away at Aylesbury.

Then on Saturday, it is back to the league programme and a visit from Barton Rovers.   The two sides last met in the 2011/12 season when St Neots enjoyed their debut season at Step Four after winning promotion from the UCL.    That match saw goals from Stefan Moore (2), Ben Mackey (2) and Dan Jacob lead St Neots to a 5-3 victory and that completed a league double for the side had won 1-0 at Barton earlier in the season with Lewis Webb the St Neots marksman.   Barton are currently ninth in the league table – seven points behind league leaders AFC Dunstable with their only away league victory coming at Kempston and last Saturday they progressed in the FA Trophy at Hullbridge Sports with an impressive 4-2 away victory.
