Reserves win final warm up match at Ely

Wednesday, 03 August 2016 21:02

Pre-season match - 30th July 2016 - Ely City Reserves VS Saints Reserves

Final friendly of the season and St Neots now look ready and prepared to host their first Spartan South Midlands league game this coming Saturday.

A switch in opponent due to West Wratting player availability, and Ant Brolia’s connections, saw Saints travelled to Ely City for their final pre-season match, good pitch, nice hospitality.

A very youthful starting eleven, setup with a 3-5-2 formation, saw first team hopefuls Jordan Brown and Claudio Osofu paired as the strike partnership. Early pressure for Saints saw close range efforts blocked by the home defence. Saints were in control for the majority of the half with good linking, build up play working openings through the channels, but quality of the final ball failed to present goals. Ely’s outlet ball was into the corners, their pace up front allowed them to open the play, but solid recovery defending limited their good work to only wide positions. Score line frustration was clear for the Saints, as attacking play continued to promise without clear chances.

Halftime 0-0.

An immediate change in attitude from ‘frustration’ to ‘positive’ presented Saints first goal on 48 minutes. Corner drills practiced at training returned its reward, with Ant Brolia’s delivery directed goal bound by Ollie Reynolds, Saints clearly happy with their set piece preparations. Half time team discussions had predicted what was to follow. Ely’s determination was fuelled by the previous nil-nil score line, which once broken, opened the gate. Saints lifted their tempo and tight passing saw Jordan Brown finish convincingly to the keepers right, 0-2. Straight from the restart Saints pressing play forced a defensive error, with Brown stealing possession from the Ely centre half to round the keeper and make it three in 10 minutes. The half continued to host good approach football but only half chances as a result. In the closing minutes the Saints defence was undone on a City throw and Ely’s miss hit finish caught the defenders out as the ball slowly rolled into the corner of the net.

Fulltime 1-3.

Good luck to Ely City this season and a big thanks for their generous, last minute hospitality.
