Pre-season friendly

DESBOROUGH TOWN      1       ST NEOTS TOWN       3

Despite torrential rain for an hour before kick off and at the start of the match the pitch was in remarkably good condition as St Neots visited former UCL colleagues Desborough Town for their penultimate pre-season fixture.   It proved to be a very useful workout with another well deserved victory and gave Manager Iain Parr another indication of his likely starting line up come the visit of Weymouth on17th August.  The initial line up included the Ghanaian trialist goalkeeper who looked confident and competent but there were few other surprises.   Desborough were always combative and committed but St Neots looked confident and in control especially in the first half.

With Adrian Sear and Ryan Sharman dominant in midfield chances were created early and after 11 minutes Lewis Hilliard opened the scoring from close range after a mix up in the home defence.   Desborough never really got past the tight visiting defence with Dan Crowie and Paul Rogers well in control and on the half hour Ryan Sharman was on the spot to slide home the second goal after the home keeper had failed to hold a stinging shot.   More goals could have followed but several strange refereeing decisions held up the St Neots attack.   After the break the predictable changes were made to give all the squad a chance to show their worth and this had the effect of leaving St Neots looking unbalanced and short of their first half rhythm.   On 64 minutes St Neots should have gone further ahead when Joe Benjamin was tripped in the area.   He got up to fire a very tame penalty kick straight at the keeper and the chance was lost.   However persistence made up for that miss when Benjamin weaved his away across the defence to fire in the third goal after 75 minutes.   Desborough never gave up trying and were rewarded eleven minutes from time with a consolation goal from Ryan Gormley.

St Neots: Trialist (Niall Conroy), Jai Davies, James Sage, Adrian Sear (Sam Spencer), Dan Crowie, Paul Rogers (Andy Palmer), Ash Fuller (Tom Wood), Ryan Sharman, Dalton Harris (Jack Sellick), Joe Benjamin, Lewis Hilliard.
