SNEOTS TOWN U18     4        SAFFRON WALDEN TOWN U18      3

St Neots produced probably their best home league performance of the season beating fourth in the table Saffron Walden by the odd goal of seven in a very entertaining match.   It completed St Neots’ first league double of the season and was a personal triumph for Dan Lewis who claimed his second hat trick of the season.  However he would be the first to acknowledge an impressive all round performance by his side in which his striking partner Chris Lewis had assists with two of his goals whilst in midfield Erhan Nurettin never stopped running and in defence skipper Isaac Clarke and Zac Rudman were solid and gave nothing away to a determined visiting attack.

After a bright start in which Charlie Lewis sent a speculative 30 yards shot narrowly over the crossbar and Chris Lewis had a clever chip well saved by visiting keeper Sam Soutar, St Neots fell behind after eight minutes when Jack Young scrapped determinedly on the bye line to slip a short square pass to Jordan Carter to open the scoring.   However eight minutes later St Neots levelled when Ben Southwood and Chris Lewis combined at a short corner before the latter crossed hard and low through the defence for Dan Lewis to poke home at the far post.   Owen Bevan then had the ball in the net but his effort was ruled out by an offside flag and then it was Dan Lewis who put St Neots in front with his second goal after 19 minutes going around the visiting keeper after unselfish play by Chris Lewis.   Nine minutes laterSt Neots had the luxury of a two goals cushion when Erhan Nurettin freed Chris Lewis with a delightful through pass and he drew the keeper from his line before slotting home.   Soutar then made a fine save to push away a Bevan effort and in the three minutes before the break St Neots keeper Max Fisher made two important saves to deny Trevor Eve and Jake Thompson.

Walden started the second half strongly and after 53 minutes they reduced the deficit as from a corner by substitute Callum Sparrow it was Jamie Dicker who scored from close range.   St Neots then had some defending to do as the visitors sensed a comeback but they broke forward for Dan Lewis to lob wide and Ben Southwood to find the side netting after a quick break down the right hand side.   Substitute Cassius Straughan then wasted two great chances to increase St Neots lead – both after good work by Chris Lewis – but they went begging.   The most impressive second half move involving Charlie Lewis, Nurettin and Chris Lewis ended with Dan Lewis firing narrowly over the bar but his hat trick did arrive five minutes from time when he nipped in quickly to score after the substitute Walden keeper had spilled a rising shot from Charlie Lewis.   At 4-2 the points were won but six minutes into added time Trevor Eve bundled the ball into the St Neots net from a late corner to complete the scoring.
