FA Youth Cup First Qualifying Round

ST IVES TOWN U18      2       ST NEOTS TOWN U18       0

St Ives maintained their 100% start to the season – this time in the FA Youth Cup First Qualifying Round seeing off local rivals St Neots at their adopted home at Jubilee Park, Huntingdon.   With the sides now competing in different Divisions of the Thurlow Nunn League this season this was a one off meeting and gained St Ives some revenge for the League Cup defeat at St Neots last season.   The match was won and lost in the first 45 minutes when St Ives dominated and scored the only goals of the game.   Despite significant improvement by St Neots after the break they could not find the net with the St Ives defence and goalkeeper in excellent form.  This was St Neots third first match defeat in the competition in the past four years.

St Ives began strongly and Tiago Dias almost opened the scoring after ten minutes when he dispossessed Erhan Nurettin but saw his shot blocked by a defender.   However, St Ives were quickly on top and two minutes later Dias did put his side in front with a low shot through a packed penalty area that went in off the far post with St Neots goalkeeper Evan Jeckells unsighted.   Matt Wright then set up San Davidson but he shot high over the bar and St Neots were struggling to put two passes together in reply.    Andre Williams who looked their liveliest player did wriggle free of the defence to shoot over the bar but after 36 minutes and another spell of pressure St Ives doubled their lead as Tiago Dias once again beat Jeckells this time with an angled shot with the keeper looking slow to get down to his left.   Williams did bring one good save from St Ives keeper Tom Smith but the ‘home’ side were good value for their half time lead.

The second half saw the match take a different direction.  From the start St Neots looked positive and determined and after ten minutes Jack Eldridge shot with when he should have scored following excellent work by the hard working Nurettin.   Shae Humphrey then went close with a shot that grazed the cross bar and Eldridge lively down the left flank saw his shot deflected wide by a St Ives defender.   Eldridge headed over the bar as St Neots continued to dominate possession but they were not creating clear enough clear scoring chances.   In the last ten minutes St Neots redoubled their efforts and Tom Smith made two excellent saves to deny Andre Williams and Nurettin but saved the best for last when in added time he denied substitute Luke Taylor.  The match might have had a different outcome had St Neots played throughout the match like they did in the second half.
