Pre-season friendly

POTTON UNITED       0        ST NEOTS TOWN         2

St Neots’ second pre-season match at neighbors Potton resulted in their first goals and first victory.   Once again Manager Matt Clements is giving every member of his squad including unnamed trialists every opportunity to earn themselves a place in his final squad to feature in the Club’s sixth season at Step Three.   Like the initial pre-season match Clements opted to name a first half XI and then send on all his remaining players as second half substitutes and there were ten of those.   Potton gave both ‘sides’ a worthwhile run out in conditions very different from those of the first match.   The game was played in almost constant rain on a slippery surface and the fact that St Neots came away with a clean sheet will have been satisfying.   Goalless at the break St Neots clearly were the better side in the second half and they probed patiently at the home defence being suitably rewarded with two goals in the final twelve minutes of the game.   The second half domination was principally down to the midfield skills and mobility of new signings Luke Knight and Ryan Horne and in the final analysis the finishing in front of goal.   ‘Another useful work-out’ was the Manager’s summing up.

The first half was remarkably even with Step Six Potton more than prepared to take the game to their visitors but clear-cut chances were rare at both ends of the field.  Apart from a Micky Hyem shot deflected wide St Neots had few openings whilst for the home side Aidan McLean shot wide when well-placed and Courtney Boughton brought the only significant first half save from Martin Conway.

The second half was more open and Lewis Wilson forced the save of the match from Will Cook straight after the break.   However, there were only twelve minutes remaining when St Neots made the break through after several good openings were wasted.   Then Claudio Dias who was a constant threat on the left flank crossed for Lewis Wilson to score at the near post.  St Neots could have gone on to score more goals but for some inspired goalkeeping that saw Cook twice deny the hard-working Jevani Brown.   The second goal after 84 minutes was set up by Brown for Declan Rogers who was delighted to notch his first St Neots goal since 13 December 2016 having missed much of the second half of last season with injury.
