Spartan South Midlands League - Challenge Cup Fixture: Welwyn Garden City - Away

Date: 23rd Aug’17

With the disappointment of Saturday’s defeat, we probably could have done without the Challenge Cup game away to premier league side Welwyn Garden City and with a depleted side it gave opportunity for the inclusion of two U18’s players Neya Goodridge,Adam Chambers making debuts, also a debut from the bench for Thembelani Nkala.

Welwyn Garden City fielded a strong team and started lively, applying pressure from the start- Saints stood strong and when Welwyn did break free Vitue in goal was commanding. Tonight was going to be a workman like effort from Saints with a counter attack approach the best way of getting something. After surviving a couple of goal attempts saints caught the Welwyn defence out with a quick break and was unlucky not to get reward after last ditch defending cleared the danger. Welwyn responded with more goal attempts, again the Saints defence holding strong. Saints attacking control began to grow and it was saints applying pressure with 2x further breaks and last ditch defending from Welwyn. It was in this positive period Saints made the breakthrough on 32 mins, again on the break the ball was pulled back and Alex Minall recorded his 1st goal for saints as he coolly finished, 1-nil Saints.

Saints regrouped and defended well until 9 mins later, a cross from the right dissected our defence and goalkeeper, enabling the Welwyn forward a tap in at the far post. 1-1 and that’s how it stayed until halftime.

With a positive 1st half gone, Saints were very much in the game; that lasted 6 mins in when a mistake by skipper Kevin Ashby. A soft back pass enable the Welwyn forward the opportunity to round Vitue and tuck home Welwyn’s second goal. This was the killer blow, Saints heads dropped and as the 2nd half progressed Welwyn took advance and extended their lead putting a further 3 goals in the Saint’s goal. However, through the last 15mins Saints rallied and created a couple of ½ chances that should have made the score line respectable.  In summary, up to 50 mins lots of positives and with several young players in the squad, it shows the team has depth.
