THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE CAMBRIDGE DIVISION

ELY CITY U18      3           ST NEOTS TOWN U18       2

Defending the league title they had captured for the past two seasons, St Neots suffered a first match defeat at the hands of Ely City, the runners-up two seasons ago.   It was an interesting match with St Neots twice coming from behind to level the scores before conceding a 90th minute winning goal.   Just four of last season’s St Neots squad were still eligible with a strict age limit enforced, and despite having a good pre-season the visitors were the second best side on the night and will be looking for some improvement in their next match.

Ely began in confident style and visiting keeper Ash Brewer had to be alert to push away a cross shot from Daniel Pullar before the home side got a lucky first goal.  A shot was blocked but it rebounded to the feet of Josh Bateman to open the scoring.   St Neots replied with Michael Ford going clear of the defence, but Toby Powell saved at his feet and then Jacob Joseph tested the keeper with a dipping shot that was turned over the bar.   Ellis Garner curled a shot wide but by half time the match was a fairly even contest with St Neots not creating the chances their possession demanded.

However, straight from the restart St Neots drew level when Markel Cousins showed great skill and determination to go past three defenders and beat Powell with a low shot.   Josh Bateman then saw a shot well saved but Ely regained their lead when Nehemiah Goodridge mistimed a challenge on Pullar to concede a penalty kick confidently tucked away by Ben Harnwell.   St Neots then had a good spell in which Bateman shot over the bar having been played clear by Owen Johnson, and the same St Neots player had another clear chance, but Powell spread himself to divert the shot with his legs.   A series of substitutions by both sides saw St Neots begin to look the stronger and they were rewarded when they were awarded a free kick after Joseph had been upended.   Substitute Ellis Coppolaro levelled the scores again from the spot but in the final minute of the match Ely stole all three points when substitute William Fox was left unmarked six yards out and he converted a Mateusz Pawlik cross.
