THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE – WEST DIVISION

ST NEOTS TOWN U18      6      HUNTINGDON TOWN U18       0

(Monday 15th November 2021)

St Neots Town completed a third league ‘double’ of the season – this time beating visitors Huntingdon Town, whom they had defeated in their first meeting three weeks ago. This time they improved on their first victory by an extra goal having won 5-0 at Huntingdon. There were two goals apiece for Marley Ugarte-Edwards (sixteen for the season), Julinho Gomes (eighteen so far), and Max Smalley (his fourth and fifth goals).

Huntingdon came set up to defend as their first priority, and for more than half an hour they held St Neots at bay. The home side were allowed to dominate possession, but they had little idea how to break through the resolute and defiant defence of the visiting side. In that first phase of the match visiting keeper Ciaran O’Reilly had only one serious save to make from an angled shot by St Neots skipper Ryan Thomas, whilst Marley Ugarte-Edwards shot wide when he might have done netter. The visitors eventually created an opening of their own after half an hour when Lewis Arber tested home keeper Brooklyn Peacock. Then with 34 minutes played a defensive error let in Marley Ugarte-Edwards and he opened the scoring.

With just that single goal advantage St Neots looked more purposeful after half time and eight minutes after the restart Kacper Kobus set up Max Smalley for his first goal of the match and sixty seconds later he struck again picking up a poor clearance to make it 3-0 from the edge of the penalty area. After 61 minutes the lively Charlie Clark set up Marley Ugarte-Edwards for his second goal as the visitors began to crumble. Fifteen minutes from time leading scorer Julinho Gomes put his name on the scoresheet from the penalty spot after he had been brought down by visiting keeper O’Reilly. The scoring was completed six minutes from time when substitute Newman Nshangalume provided the perfect through pass to set up Julinho Gomes for his second goal of the game.
